Mind Is Coward. May Love Be Scared?
Hasan Dede You said Mevlana is the master of love. Even one name of Exalted Mevlana is ‘the Prophet of Love’. Would you, as His servant, tell us about love? What does emergence of love in the heart of a human mean?
Love is the hand of God. Someone who is caught by love is held by God. Being a lover means not to mention about one’s own entity and self. It is essential to be together with a lover and always prefer being a lover. Sitting alongside non-lovers for even one minute is considered haram (forbidden by religion). God tells everyone ‘become lover’ and opens that way for us. But God immediately takes back this blessing from those who do not want it.
“Through Love the earthly body soared to the skies: the mountain began to dance and became nimble. Love inspired Mount Sinai, O lover, (so that) Sinai (was made) drunken and Moses fell in a swoon. Were I joined to the lip of one in accord with me, I too, like the reed, would tell all that may be told; (But) whoever is parted from one who speaks his language becomes dumb, though he have a hundred songs. When the rose is gone and the garden faded, thou wilt hear no more the nightingale's story.” (Mathnawi, I/25)
Dear Mevlana was asked ‘Would you tell us about love, what kind of state does it have?’ He said ‘How can I say, be like me then understand it’. Human cannot easily reveal his/her feeling, that feeling takes him/her to another world and settles him/her there. Therefore we cannot mention about love to those who have not experienced it. It is easy to talk about love to those who have tasted it. It carries mind of the wise away and makes the mad wise. The Creator is above everything. If a human addresses himself/herself towards It, then he/she will get rid of heedlessness through that love and Its beauties will appear on the lover. The lover's ailment is separate from all other ailments: love is the astrolabe of the mysteries of God. Whether love be from this (earthly) side or from that (heavenly) side, in the end it leads us yonder. Whatsoever I say in exposition and explanation of Love, when I come to Love (itself) I am ashamed of that (explanation). Although the commentary of the tongue makes (all) clear, yet tongueless love is clearer. Whilst the pen was making haste in writing, it split upon itself as soon as it came to Love. (Mathnawi, I/110)
Love is the essence of everything. Love is the thing that gives birth to knowledge and revives minds. Another name of Precious Muhammed is Habibullah, meaning the beloved of God. Everything is based on love, belief and riveting yourself on what you love. If you manage to fulfill these things, Its beauties will begin emerging. We have lastly been created, however the Creator has been created in us.
“Although the external sun is unique, still it is possible to imagine one resembling it; The spiritual Sun, which is beyond the aether, hath no peer in the mind or externally. Where is room in the imagination for His essence, that the like of Him should come into the imagination? When news arrived of the face of Shamsu’ddín (the Sun of the Religion), the sun of the fourth heaven drew in its head (hid itself for shame). (Mathnawi, I/120)
The being inside us feeds from ‘Ve nefahtü fihi min ruhi’ ‘and breathed into him of My spirit’. As it obtains that, its appetite rises. This appetite is called ‘love’. Love can arise in the heart of human via both eyes and ears. The Heart must be merged into a ‘Heart’ to attain to the dawn of love, because one cannot make bread without yeast. Would that Being had a tongue; that it might remove the veils from existent beings! O breath of (phenomenal) existence, whatsoever words thou mayest utter, know that thereby thou hast bound another veil upon it (the mystery). . That utterance and (that) state (of existence) are the bane of (spiritual) perception: to wash away blood with blood is absurd, absurd. Since I am familiar with His frenzied ones, day and night I am breathing forth (the secrets of Love) in the cage (of phenomenal existence). (Mathnawi, III/4725)
Is there fear in love? What does fear arise from? Even if we learn or know a lot, everything may misguide us. Without love, human may be misled even by his/her family. But with love, the entire world cannot mislead him/her. Just as the ash never burns in fire, a human burning in love is never deceived by either his/her own mind or others’. Mind is coward. May love be scared? Love is not servant, but the master. Everything and everyone are its servant.
