The way a person binds himself to a spiritual master can be expressed in different ways. You can give your word or make a vow, promising to live according to that spiritual path. You can "cut off your head" and want the head of the spiritual master to be on your shoulders. This means you want to see, hear, speak and think as the spiritual master does, that is, as the perfect human being. You can surrender yourself to God and accept that everything is as God wills it. All of these mean giving up your own existence and accepting the total existance of God, through the spiritual master. When you dedicate yourself you instead to live the way of your patron saint and realize the divine within yourself.
